PDC - was he really all that?
|
Ok before conclusions are jumped he was clearly a magnificently skilled player who upon occasion demonstrated those skills, he also had a certain empathy with the supporters that prevails to this day
But, having grown up with Devonshire, Brooking and Bonds, also seen the end of Sir Bob and now witnessing that iconic potential with Payet, where does he fit in the pantheon?
For every moment of man Utd in the cup and that goal against Wimbledon, there was the sitting down on the pitch and the mysterious not travelling north incidents. Devisive in the dressing room yet a brilliant trainer and example setter to the youth. Bloke was a conundrum - so what are your views?
At the time opinions were split on the fora, be in no doubt of that. For me an enigmatic wanderer, somewhat unhinged who like a desert flower had brief flowerings of brilliance amid sustained periods of frustrating prickliness

Alot of people won't like this....
Payet is a much MUCH better player.
So good he could play for any CL team in Europe and not look out of place.
I don't think ou could say the same about PDC

I think he scored with his last touch of the ball for us when we were relegated in a game against Birmingham.

I agree entirely - and HandP, so did Liam Brady in his last game I recall, Wolves down the south bank end and he ran into the Run if I am not going mad? Great day that

Di Canio was, when in the mood, a sensational player to watch. Must have been a nightmare to manage and was clearly a bit mental but made you look forward to every single game.
A bit like Payet and some of our current squad. Long may that continue.

Yes he was. He was great.
Hope Payet stays and performs for the same amount of time.

I saw every single game home and away the bloke ever played for us in the flesh and he was quite simply magnificent, regardless of the histrionics.
Payet may well be a better player, but he needs to stick around and play 150 games before he's mentioned in the same way for me.
Paolo loved our club and fans passionately, though it looks good in that respect too so far for payet.

Yes he really was all that, watch the videos of him on youtube, had some great skill, scored some superb goals and was only playing for us because he was a nutter who'd burned all his bridges elsewhere.

Payet has a massive opportunity to achieve that of which PDC did which not a single mega rich club with a no limit spending facility can offer which is the chance to become a part of West Ham folklore
Does not carry the baggage with PDC that ironically helped him to achieve cult status at Upton Park but he just like Di Canio has the technique and influence on a game to become the Olympic Stadiums first genuine home superstar

Di Canio was brilliant.
Payet is brilliant.
They've both worn the West Ham shirt - that's all that matters.

Paolo made going to games worth it even when we lost, he was just total box office. His first full season here he was unplayable.

One of the most entertaining and skilful players I've seen play over there. Some of the best moments watching West Ham he was involved or made them. He was a great player, slightly mental but fucking entertaining. The goal at old Trafford, mugging off keown, that Wimbledon goal, the volley at Chelsea and all the other flicks and tricks. Will def go down in history as a West Ham favourite, especially for people like myself that only caught the very back end of Brooking, devo and bonds. I think if payet stays with us a few years and carrys on as he is he will surpass dicanio. I think he is absolute world class and would walk into any team in the league, not just the skill but the vision and work rate to go with it. An absolute pleasure to watch.

Dicanio was a magnificent player a fruit loop for sure but a pleasure to watch (most weeks), and my all time west ham hero. As a fan I consider myself a very lucky boy that I got to see Dicanio do his thing, and now I get to watch Payet do his thing too, for the record as an all round footballer Payet is probably better but as a West Ham fan who cares, how lucky are we to have been able to watch players like Dicanio and Payet strut there stuff week in week out. Most supporters of football clubs never see anyone of their class there entire lives. Just enjoy the memories and enjoy the present.

Just because Payet is the better player, and I agree he is, why the need to re-write history?
Di Canio was fucking sublime for us, and up there with our best ever players.

The not travelling north thing was a load of bollocks as well. He was no spring chicken and so had injuries and I saw him play plenty of times up north.
